A Tangle Of Roots
Imagine you’re a woman of fifty two and you’ve just set eyes on your
daughter for the very first time. She’s twenty six years old. In all
the intervening years you have had no idea what she looked like,
what she was doing or what she was called. But it gets worse. That
daughter now describes the appalling abuse she has suffered while
trying to trace her roots.
Within living memory, Australian authorities took a very tough line with illegitimacy. Babies were taken away at birth and the mothers deprived of all information about them. Instead, they were pressured into signing adoption papers while still emotionally weak. ![]()
